Healthy taco seasoning that’s made at home is a great alternative to store bought taco seasoning.
Taco seasoning mix is something I buy all the time without really thinking about it. We use it all the time, especially in our easy taco dip that we love so much!
But a a while ago I took the time to read the ingredients. Store bought taco dip is full of stuff that I don’t recognize!
Really, healthy taco seasoning mix is something that you can easily make at home, with just a few spices.
You probably even have most, or even all, of these on hand in your cupboard already.
Healthy Taco Seasoning
This mix is just a little bit spicy. If you want it milder, omit the crushed red pepper flakes, and it’ll be mild enough for most kids. If you want to kick up the heat a little, add the optional cayenne pepper.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 teaspoon organic chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon Cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon Salt
- 1/4 teaspoon Black Pepper
- 1 tablespoon Paprika
- 1 tablespoon Corn Starch
- 1 tablespoon Garlic Powder
- 1 tablespoon Onion Powder
- 1 tablespoon Oregano
- 1 tablespoon Brown Sugar (optional)
- 1 tablespoon Crushed Red Pepper Flakes (optional for more heat)
- 1 tablespoon Cayenne (optional for more heat)
Combine all the ingredients, mix and store.
Makes 1/2 cup of taco seasoning.
Low sodium taco seasoning
For low sodium taco seasoning, just omit the 1/4 teaspoon salt from the recipe above to make low salt taco seasoning with all the flavor you’ll love.
Organic taco seasoning
To make organic taco seasoning, simply use only organic spices like Simply Organic Chili Powder. See prices on Amazon here.
How to use homemade healthy taco seasoning
Simply add a teaspoon of taco seasoning mix per pound of food you want to season. Add more to taste, if needed.
Looking for something to cool you down? Try a strawberry matcha smoothie, or (my favorite) an almond milk berry smoothie.

Thanks for this! So sick of buying pre-packaged taco mix. Now I can make my own!
Cheers!
So cool! Thank you for this!
Are these measurements really 14 tsps/ or 1/4, 1/2 tsp?
Hi Jeri, the measurements are really 14 teaspoons – the total amount this makes is about 2 cups mix.
