As a food lover, sustainable food and drink are on my mind a lot lately. The news is filled with credible reports our natural world is in grave danger, and it’s easy to feel lost and helpless. Happily, there are ways you can protect the earth and its creatures, and enjoy fantastic meals at the same time.

Let’s start with wine

After all, most great picnics start with wine, and this time we have a fantastic choice that’s good for the environment, too: Nobilo’s Sauvignon Blanc proudly certified by Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand.

It’s a wonderful choice for an outdoor picnic, with fresh, crisp, refreshing, citrusy, with tropical fruit flavours that pair perfectly with seafood!

Easy Tuna Pinwheels with Fresh Veggies

These easy tuna pinwheels are perfect as an appetizer or a snack. They’re ideal for a picnic, since they’re so easy to eat just with your fingers. Plus, they’re quick to make and tasty!

Even better, they’re made with MSC certified tuna. MSC lets you enjoy a world of wild seafood that’s certified sustainable, so it’s good for the oceans too.

Overfishing is the single biggest threat our oceans face today, so it’s important to shop sustainable fish. Luckily, buying sustainable fish is as easy as looking for the MSC blue fish label when you shop. I used MSC sustainably sourced flaked white wild albacore in these tuna pinwheel sandwiches.

How to make these easy tuna pinwheels

Peel and pit the avocado. In a small bowl, mash avocado with the lime juice. Spread half of the avocado mixture on each tortilla.

Pat spinach, sweet red pepper and carrots with a paper towel to remove excess moisture. Sprinkle the spinach, sweet red pepper and carrots over the avocado. Spoon the tuna mixture over the vegetables and roll the tortillas up tightly. Slice into one inch pieces. Refrigerate until serving.

Love the use of veggies in your pinwheels! I often find pinwheel recipes a little underwhelming, but this is so full of bright and healthy vegetables (plus the wonderfully sustainable seafood of course!). Love the use of avocado too. Cheers!

I love tuna, but I love wine more than just about anything and this looks delicious! I also miss pinic’ing in the Okanagan – it’s been a few yrs and this post made me ache to go back. Can I buy that wine in Alberta?
