In the past few months I’ve noticed that my kids aren’t drinking enough water. We’ve fallen into a bad habit of letting them drink fruit juices and occasionally even pop. While we focus on some great beverages to help us kick our soda habit, we also really want our whole family to drink pure water.
I’ve been working hard to get my little ones to drink more water. Here’s how to get your kids to drink more water in 3 quick steps.
Step 1: Make drinking water fun and convenient
My kids are much more likely to drink water in a bottle, so I picked up some water bottles.
I stocked our fridge, and even brought a bottle of water for each of us everywhere we went.
Step 2: Lead by Example
The second step was to start to lead by example. I’ve been bad about showing my kids that I drink a lot of water.
Robin Plotkin, Registered and licensed dietitian, suggests asking your children if they’d like a drink of water every time you go for a drink of water. Soon, says Plotkin, your kids will be asking you if you’d like to join them for a water break.
Step 3: Get them active and thirsty
Get them outside, active, thirsty, and then hydrated with water.
My strategy is to always pack a healthy, nutritious snack, and include water bottles to make drinking water easy and convenient.
We spent a lot of time being active this summer, including hiking, swimming at the pool and the beach, going to the park, and even taking trips to the petting zoo.
We took water everywhere we went to stay hydrated and healthy.
We’d love to hear your tips and tricks for teaching your kids about the importance of staying healthy and hydrated.
